What are the Different Types of Clear Aligners?
Invisalign and Invisalign Teen remained widely recognized clear aligner systems, though additional alternatives became available over time. The office offered several clear aligner options to accommodate different treatment needs and preferences.
Invisalign
Created by Align Technology, Invisalign was the original clear aligner system. Treatment involved a series of custom BPA-free plastic aligners designed using a computerized model of the patient’s mouth. Patients switched to a new set of aligners every one to two weeks as the teeth gradually moved into alignment. Invisalign aligners were smooth, removable, and less noticeable than traditional braces.
Invisalign Teen
Invisalign Teen was designed specifically for younger patients and functioned similarly to Invisalign for adults. The aligners included features such as eruption tabs to accommodate developing teeth, along with replacement aligners for added flexibility during treatment.
3M Clarity Aligners
3M Clarity Aligners functioned similarly to Invisalign and were produced using a digital treatment plan based on a computerized model of the patient’s teeth. The aligners were clear, removable, and designed for comfort throughout treatment.
In-House Clear Aligners
Custom in-house clear aligners were designed, fabricated, and packaged directly in the office using high-resolution 3D printing technology and FDA-approved materials. Producing aligners in-house allowed for greater flexibility, faster turnaround times, and more precise treatment adjustments when needed.
How Do Clear Aligners Work?
Clear aligners worked by applying steady, controlled pressure to gradually move the teeth into their ideal positions. Each set of aligners was programmed to achieve specific tooth movements, and as patients progressed through the series, the teeth shifted accordingly through a natural biological process known as bone remodeling. Once treatment was complete, retainers were used to maintain the final results.
The Bite Issues Clear Aligners Can Fix
Advancements in treatment planning and aligner materials expanded the range of bite issues that could be treated with clear aligners. Aligners were commonly used to address crowding, spacing, crooked teeth, overbites, underbites, crossbites, and open bites, including some more complex orthodontic cases.
For cases involving jaw discrepancies or more advanced tooth movements, additional orthodontic auxiliaries such as attachments or rubber bands were sometimes incorporated into treatment.
What Did the Clear Aligner Procedure Entail?
The clear aligner process began with digital records, including photos, x-rays when necessary, and a 3D scan created using the iTero® digital scanner. These scans generated a computerized model of the patient’s mouth, allowing treatment to be planned with precision.
Each tooth movement was digitally mapped to create a customized treatment plan designed around the patient’s dental and facial anatomy. Depending on the aligner system selected, aligners were either manufactured by Invisalign or 3M, or fabricated directly in-office using 3D printing technology.
Patients typically wore aligners for approximately 22 hours per day, removing them only for eating, drinking anything other than water, and oral hygiene. Aligners were changed every one to two weeks throughout treatment.
Routine check-up appointments were generally shorter and less frequent than traditional braces appointments because tooth movements were pre-programmed into the aligners.
At the conclusion of treatment, patients transitioned to retainers to help maintain their new smiles and stabilize the bite.
How Much Did Clear Aligners Cost?
The cost of clear aligner treatment varied depending on factors such as case complexity and treatment length. Insurance coverage often helped reduce out-of-pocket expenses, particularly when orthodontic benefits were included in a dental plan.
Flexible financing options, along with HSA and FSA eligibility, also made treatment more accessible for many patients.
